QING PU THUMB
ISLAND
The
Qingpu
Thumb
Island
project is located on a man-made lake outside of the
Shanghai
metropolitan area. The project intends to bring about the power of a
building’s presence through its disappearance. In this theory of Chinese
landscape, space, materials and energy are in continuous flux in between
the man-made and natural landscape. The building is an extension of the
landscape, forming a thumb-like green peninsula. This flowing strip of
green rises and undulates, providing a focal point in the middle of the
lake. This concept of landscape continues its flow inside and penetrates
all programmatic spaces at various elevations. If the building were a
giant piece of rock, these would be grottoes and channels. The varying
ways sunlight is admitted by different transparent materials which
transform the spatial qualities inside. Users can choose their
destinations and paths to reach them. QPTI integrates the Chinese
philosophy of views, amusement and habitation in landscape design.
